I have Comcast which doesn't have any special program front end like AOL. Fedora Core 4 works on their service, but don't expect support from them they only support Windows XP.

Does your broadband connection have an ethernet port coming out of the cable modem?

If it does then it should just work with linux.

I would recommend you get a hardware firewall (even for use with windows systems) as it adds a layer of protection and allows you to have more than one system on the Internet at the same time.

Some ISP providers lock in the MAC address of your computer. Ran into that once when installing a Netgear router. I just used the option in the router to clone the MAC address of the PC that had already been registered.

If the AOL content is an issue check if they allow access via a web browser to that content. If they do then it should work with linux just fine.
