New partition, files disappearing . . .

This afternoon, being as I was running out of disk space on my /home partition, I create a new ext2 partition on the drive . . . Copy a bunch of stuff over to it, go about my business. Used files on the new partition with no problem.

So now, I check up on it, and the stuff I put on it isn't there any more. The disk is blank. Apparently.

Nothing irreplacable. Not a huge deal. Annoying as hell, and most of all, confusing.

What might've happened here? Any reliable ways of telling when a partition will spontaneously clear itself? Are there any logs which might contain clues?

Did you reboot in the between? Could the new partition not be mounted?

No reboot, just a restart of the X server. I've tried mounting/unmounting/mounting again from the console - it's there, but aside from the obligatory "lost+found" directory, it's empty.

According to the superblock (via debugfs), all but 11 inodes are free, and 0 have been deleted. Aside from my anecdotal evidence that I was using it, I can find no sign that it isn't a freshly-created filesystem.

Which probably means that there's a freshly-created filesystem on there, but I haven't done any extra mk2fs's on it.
