the obvious would always be to try that app in wine or vmware or similar "emulators"..

I hate seeing this topic everywhere. It's not all that cool. They use old maps and piece them together. I'm pretty sure according to those maps, my house is still under construction. It's not new either.
Keyhold made this a while ago, and then google bought it. I still have my 7-day trial version of it from last year.
WINE won't allow you to install it. At least to my knowledge it won't. VMware migh, and maybe QEMU....

I don't think the maps are that old, at least for where I live. My area is expanding very quickly and from a quick look at it, it looks relatively up-to-date.
I feel the same way as carwill, I think it's really neat (granted I'm into GIS and get overly excited about things like this ) and wish I could find something like this for Linux. However, it says that they're working on it for macs. Maybe Linux will come eventually if enough interest is shown?

I would say pics are at least 1 year old as I see no roofs anywhere here in Orlando with blue tarps from hurricane damage last Sept/Oct.

Old photos or not (they claim most maps are 1-2 year old) I'd have to say I'm very impressed. I'd be interested in hearing if someone can make this work on Linux using wine etc.

One year old is very recent for air photos. It is expensive to fly air photo runs so it can't be done continuously (well not continuously, but frequently) for an area. In my experience, getting one year old air photos is extremely exciting

The maps on google maps are rather old...specifically in Mansfield Tx, the house next to my brothers home is not shown, and I know its been there at the very least 3-4 years.
My neighborhood looks right, but most of the homes there have been there for over 20 years.

There are satellite images for the whole world, but if you look at certain areas (largely in North America and Europe) there are areas where there are strips of images that are coloured differently - these are air photos (they have much higher resolution than the satellite images - ex. being able to see individual houses clearly)

Goodle Earth seems to work pretty well with WINE. Read it on winehq.org.

Google Earth is really cool when you first see it. I like it for getting directions. It is the first "mapping system" I have seen that didnt have you driving 30 mins from my house to the nearest town by making you go secondary roads.

It's a novelty which will fade away after a while.
