Linux is a multiuser OS. The account you created on installation is a user account. You will have also been asked for a password for the root account. This is a special "superuser" account which can control every file on the system. Your user account can only access those files you need to run normal day-to-day tasks. To get "superuser" permission, open a terminal and type
Code:
su -
(and enter the root password at the prompt)
The "-" is important.

Have a read of this discussion regarding Linux permissions and ownership.

BE VERY CAREFUL CHANGING FILE PERMISSIONS!

If you don't know what you're doing, you can render your entire system completely useless. Do not change file permissions "just to make things easier." Many files/directories require a very specific user/permissions. If you must access a file, do as brahms suggests.
