Exclamation Problem launching apps in FC4

Hi all,

I just recently installed FC4 on my main work PC (Yesterday). I managed to install python 2.4.0 and configure my network so all seemed to be working fine. Today, I can't do a single thing with it. I try to open network configuration, it ask me for root pasword, I input that and nothing happens. I try YUM extender same thing. I try various other system tools and nothing.

All other apps seem to be working well, firefox, evolution, etc.

Please someone help out a newbie.
Cheers,
P.

one more update

Just another update, I thought that it could have something to do with a bug, so I tried to check YUm and got the following message:

Quote:
[root@lobo pedro]# yum check-update
The yum libraries do not seem to be availableon your system for this version of python 2.4.1 (#1, Jun 27 2005, 18:41:05)
[GCC 4.0.0 20050519 (Red Hat 4.0.0-8)]
Please make sure the package you used to installyum was built for your install of python.
[root@lobo pedro]#
Does anybody have any idea what this could be? I've read somewhere that users have recompiled their kernel after installing some software (or something of the sort). Is this necessary and if so, how do I do this.

Thanks in advance.

I downloaded the packages from python.org. Where can I get FC4 packages?

I have tried to reinstall python RPM but the same thing happens... in other words nothing. It asks me for root password and then does nothing.

Thanks for all your help.

Where did you get the python packages used to update? Make sure you use packages from the Official base or updates-released repositories only, replacing core components will cause havoc.

Thanks to all your help but unfortunately (being a newbie has it's costs... ) havoc has already been caused.
Not to worry though, since it was a fresh install and I still haven't done much else, I will reinstall tomorrow. Maybe this time I'll have better luck.

Just a little bit off-topic:
Can anyone point a newbie in the direction of some good reading material.
I'm a very recent linux convert and the more I read, the more I learn. The more I learn, the more I begin to love Linux... and FC in particular.
I think it has the right balance between user friendly (easy windows like guides and gui's) and expert wise. I just love it and still don't know how to take advantage of all it's potential... imagine when I am able.....

Cheers to all
P.
