    FC4-Crash @ PCMCIA-Services

    Hi Fedora-Community!

I installed FC4 on my Notebook Acer 1693 WLMI. The Installation was succesful but after
rebooting, the system stops at the point, where the PCMCIA-Services were loaded.

Can anyone help me with that problem?
I installed Ubuntu before and there was the same problem, but there, it was possible to deactivate the PCMCIA-System (Boot-Option). But Ubunutu didn't recognize my x700 so I get a black screen after booting and no text-login...

    THX!

    Hey,
i have the same Problem. I installed FC4 on my Acer Travelmate 8103 WLMI. Installation was successful. When I try to boot it reaches the point where it says, that PCMCIA services get started. Then I just see colored vertical lines on my screen and the system freezes. That's it.

You can let PCMCIA services down with (I)Interactive mode before it reaches the load of PCMCIA services. Or go to rescue-mode and just clean the files on

    /etc/rc5.d/*pcmcia
    /etc/rc3.d/*pcmcia

to make it out of the boot process.

I have a X600 and the only thing was that I could not get other screen resolution, only 800x600. To solve this I run

    system-config-display

And I told Xorg that I had a LCD 1280x800 (The X600 was already detected) and restart X. You can do this in rescue-mode too.
It races on my Acer 1692 WLMI.

    Hi,

I have the same Problem on my Acer Travelmate 8104 WLMI. Installation was successful. When I
try to boot it reaches the point where it says, that PCMCIA services get started. Then I
just see colored vertical lines on my screen and the system freezes. That's it.

So i follow the procedure found in forums

    In /etc/rc.d/init.d/pcmcia is 95:
    if ! grep -q pcmcia /proc/devices ; then

I removed the ! and then my laptop can boot.

    BUT.......

My PCMCIA interface doesn't work. And I need it to be up for my Orinoco Gold wifi card to
    work.

When I try cardctl status :
    no pcmcia drivers in /proc/devices

when I type at the shell :

    modprobe pcmcia_core
    modprobe yenta_socket
    modprobe ds

cardctl status show me list of pcmcia cards

    cardmgr

    I got : cardmgr[xxxx]: watching 3 socket

    And then the system freeze....

    Any idea ???

    Phil

    I solved the problem:

    login in single-mode

go to /etc/hotplug.d and open the file "pcmcia"
put "exit 0" in the first line and the pcmcia-services don't start

    Have Phun

Does this mean that Fedora Core 4 cannot works on an Acer Travelmate laptop with pcmcia up ??

If, so does anyone know if there is another distribution more suitable to my need ?

    Hey rclinux,

I have tried changing X server display to 1280x800 on the Acer Aspire 1691, and FC4 will spit the dummy. I can only run it on 800x640. The laptop uses a X700 not the X600, which FC4 seem to have covered.

    Anyone else has any suggestions?

And about the PCMCIA issue, i had that initially too. Crashed on boot, but after disabling it works. However I too want to have the PCMCIA service running.

I had the same problem on my Sony Vaio VGN-S460 with both PCMCIA and the display. I disabled PCMCIA and it booted fine. My display should display in 1280x800 but it would only display in 1024x768. I fixed it by switching from the vesa driver to the nvidia driver.

I have tried almost all of the ATI drivers there, but still had no luck. X just wouln't start properly.

I will try to update things with yum and see if that will work...
can't remember is it livang.org? or something like that?

    noob sorry folks

Booting with the pci=acpi noapic prevents the computer crashing during pcmcia service start, but i can't activate my ipw2200 (even if it seen, i cannot associates it), neither my Orinoco Gold (pcmcia). The drawback is now that my USB mouse jerks...

But for the orinoco, I think I have to get the madwifi drivers (cause I tried the Auditor distribution and YES it works, but not the ipw2200 !!!).

I've made an Up2date and my kernel is now 2.6.12 but the behaviour of the laptop is the same...

I have also some other tracks (pnpbios=off pci=biosirq)...

If an expert could help us, it would be great !!

    Hey maclinux,

I saw you post about your VGN-S460 on ICQ and wondered if you could show me what your xorg.conf looks like. Did you upgrade to Nvidia 7667? Are you using kernel 2.6.10-5? I am majorly stuck right now. Wifi will not come up even though I upgraded to ipw2200 1.0.6 and my screen is getting those lines you mentioned. Plus there is the whole PCMCIA issue. Did you get that working?

    Thanks for any info.

I am using the latest FC4 2.6.12 kernel. I disabled pcmcia and it doesnt crash anymore but pcmcia inoperable. The video issue is solved by using the nvidia 7667 driver. I am also using ipw2200 1.0.0 which comes with FC4 and kernel 2.6.12.

I eventually got most my bugs worked out. The reason I bought this laptop was to get an ECHO INDIGO IO PCMCIA card. Are you saying there is absolutely no fix for pcmcia? argh.
