Gateway settings

I'm just a little bit confused what are the differences between these two files here ?

/etc/sysconfig/network & /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0

They both have the GATEWAY settings but are they the same or they have different meanings ?

Thanks.

i dont think that the ifcfg-eth0 is supposed to have a gateway setting. i checked both mine and i have a gateway= in /etc/sysconfig/network but not ifcfg-eth0

(edit) maybe a dhcp thing? ....since my network is all static... not sure.
