How to search for avaiable wireless networks?

Hi, I am using IBM T41, in windows there is a function called IBM access connecttion which helps me to search avaiable wireless connections in the area, so I can choose one to connect.
But in FC4 if I set it to auto them the wireless works fine, but it always connect to the neighbor's AP.
I encryped my own AP with WEP, but when I set it to my own SSID and the WEP it never successfully connected.

if you have the wireless-tools package installed, at the command prompt, type:

"iwlist wlan0 scan"

where "wlan0" is the device name for your wireless card. it may be named something else. also, you should be root to do this. the wireless-tools package can be fetched here: http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pu...re4.3.i386.rpm

first, you need to properly set up your wireless access point, with an ssid name, channel number, and at least wep encryption. when you have done that, you should (as root) go to system settings, then network, then new, then wireless connection. in the dialog that pops up, you need to enter all that same info as appropriate. change it to "managed" mode with a specified ssid. enter the channel that your ap is broadcasting on. enter the wep key (if you're using one). after you're done creating the connection, issue a "service network restart" from the console as root.

hope that helps.

enter the channel first; then change the mode -- a workaround.
