Tomcat??

I think I am about to ask a stupid question. I have been running Apache on my server for about 8 months now but I have never heard of Tomcat before. I have read the What is Tomcat in the Tomcat FAQ but I still do not understand. What is a servlet? Can some one show me some examples of Tomcat on the web?
