Smile Sound Problem on FC4 on Dell Inspiron 5100

Hi all,
I'm a novice in Linux enviroment. Yesterday I installed FC 4 and I'v got a problem detecting the sound card.
The sound card detected from the S.O is:

Vendor : Intel
Model: Corporation 82801DB/DBL/DMB(ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) AC' 97 Audio Controller
Module: snd-intel8x0

When I make a sound test From the speaker of the PC I don't hear nothing...
If I try with headphone I hear the sound !!!!
Anyone knows what should be ????
Thanks in advance

Fabrizio

I would run Kmix and check the different output settings. Make sure you don't have anything muted. (Check the "PCM" slider. )
If that's not it then I'm not sure.

Try gnome-volume-control (or right-click the volume control in the panel and select volume control). See if some options are 'muted'.

Hello I have the same problem with my laptop HP pavilion zd7000, My audio device is ( Intel Corporation 82801EB/ER (ICH5/ICH5R) AC'97 Audio Controller. The driver is ( snd-intel8x0 ), this is looking like this is a major prob every where, I'm sure that it will be resolved but, the question is when and in what version.

I would like to figure out the prob if it is a simple fix, well I guess I will have to sit and wait till I get the help or something

try this
open volume control, go to 'switch' tab. check External Amplifier.
If you don't have switch tab, go to menu Edit->Preference. check the box of External Amplifier. Then you will have that switch tab.
This works for my Inspiron 9300.

Sound Problem on FC4 on Dell Inspiron 5100

I have the same problem, its the oddest thing ive ever come across that the sound works on the headphones but not on the system speakers. Ive checked all my settings and I'm a bit out of sorts on what to check next.
Plays perfectly fine when i hook up headphones or an input to a speaker set to the headphone jack port.
*shrug*

And for those of us that the simple mixer settings were not the resolution here is a link to another solution. http://oasis.dit.upm.es/~jantonio/personal/aspire1410/ . With some eratta. To disable in the .config file do "#CONFIG_SND_INTEL8X0M is not set" at the appropriate line. And the blacklist entry is snd-intel8x0m not snd_intel8x0m.

I searched all over these and other forums and this is what worked for me. Thanks to Juan Antonio for answering my email. His site references an ACER laptop but I have an HP zd7020. This should work for any laptop using the AC'97 audio. Hope this helps.
