Kernel panic after upgrade

I tried to upgrade from Fedora Core 3 to Fedora Core 4. The install went fine but after I rebooted the kernel panics immediately after the GRUB screen:

No volumes found
Unable to find volume group "VolGroup00"
ERROR: /bin/lvm exited abnormally with value 5! (pid 421)
mount: error 6 mounting ext3
ERROR: opening /dev/console!!!!: 2
error dup2'ing fd of 0 to 0
error dup2'ing fd of 0 to 1
error dup2'ing fd of 0 to 2
switchroot: mount failed: 22
Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!

Seems pretty drastic to me.. Any suggestions?

seems no one as any advice to offer on how to fix this... I tried booting from the install DVD and running linux rescue. The volume mounts normally, I'd like to at least be able to backup my home directory, could someone tell me how to burn a cd from the command line? Afterwards I'll format the drive and begin anew...
