After spending all day trying to get my intel 845G video card built into my mobo to run in 1280x768 resolution, I have decided that it is not worth my time to spend another day working on the problem. Therefore, I need a PCI card that can do this.
I am using Fedora Core 3 and would very much like a recommendation on a PCI video card that will play MPEG-2 video (MPEG-4 would be nice too, for quicktime, xvid, etc...) and run in 1280x768 resolution at at least 70hz. I need PCI because the mobo doesn't have AGP.
Since this is my 3rd day back in linux after a few years, I wont be much help, but I'd say nvidia - they've had great widescreen support for quite a while now, and you could pick up a gf4 440mx for cheap

My Laptop is 1280x800...I am running Kubuntu on it and am only able to get 1280x768...I had to generate a modeline for the xorg.conf file just to get it to that resolution.
I used a utility called gtf...
