k-lined from #fedora for no reason

Just wanted to say thanks for getting me k-lined from freenode.net.

An operator told me that my one-sentence message on a timer would be ok. And somebody named Anvil had me k-lined for spamming?

You should have asked me to shut it off. I would have done so immediately.

I asked for channel rules multiple times, there were none. I asked an operator if I could run my timer, he said yes.

Next time, show a little respect and make at least ONE attempt to speak with a person before having them k-lined for absolutely no reason. I hope you are proud of yourself. I had originally planned to spend some time working with and helping the fedora community, but I think I will now look elsewhere to do so.

I hope you consider this before pre-maturely K-Lining other visitors to your IRC channel.

I understand your frustration. In the future, please try to make either a private request of somebody (if that's possible -- I understand that that can be hard).

Also, I can't help but feel a bit hurt by your words -- we're certainly trying to have a decent community for fedora. Sometimes folks make mistakes -- it's no big deal.

Anvil is pretty much the primary day-to-day admin of #fedora. I've directed Anvil over in the direction of this thread -- I'm not sure he'll get the msg, but I'll try again if he doesn't, and if I remember. :-)

No, he got it right the first time.

Publicly embarrassing people for their behaviour is quite often the only way most of them learn. I've been an IRC op for years in an EFnet channel, and you don't just kick-ban people on a whim unless you're an *******. Warn them first, boot them second, ban them third. Is that too much to ask?

Banned By Anvil Too

I also got banned by Anvil from #fedora. I know I made a mistake, i was using caps up. But I got no single warning. These kind of people is what makes the Linux community to fail in its attempt make a true alternative to ms windows.

And theres many more people, and we all have alerted RedHat about this, who should care about this issue a lot, specially when they are sponsoring the community as they do. I encourage everyone in the same situation to let RedHat know, for everyone's sake. Thanks a lot.

Realize that the operators are human beeing who have their good and their bad days. And from experience I know that the longer you've been an operator, the strighter you get. In a channel with 400 people, like #Fedora, if you're not behaving you're out. It's stright, but it's understandable.

Here's some general rules when talking to computer-people:
1. If you don't have anything to say, shut up about it.
2. Don't use caps-lock, leet-speak, acronyms, slang, local expressions or similar.
3. Ask your queston, don't 'ask to ask.
4. Never start your question with "Does anyone here use.." or "Is anyone here running..". You don't have to use the application to know how to fix it.
5. Don't Troll! This is important, don't provoke people needlessly, don't ask questions you know the answer of. Don't start discussions for the sake of the discussion.
6. Questions such as "Why should I use Fedora?" is just annoying. We don't care if you use Fedora or not!
7. IRC Is a horrible fora for getting getting your questions answered and it's completely useless if you intend to learn anything. There's no control, anyone can throw out some answer that might or might not work and there's no way to know which of the 20 answers you get is the one to do. Read documentation, use the forum.

I agree with you with remark in all rules but #3. "You don't have to use the application to know how to fix it". I think there's this culture inside all the linux developers: Bite the dust if you wanna learn linux. I think end users don't have to be computer geeks. Some of us need a full step by step guide (steps like "click there", "press this") to do the stuff that results so incredibly easy for you. It's what it takes to fight M$ windows.

By seeing the attitude of people like this "Anvil" guy, I'm starting to believe developers just want to build a great OS only for themselves. It makes them feel special, using something that nobody else can perform the smallest task.

Just as with this forum, I doubt there are many developers on #fedora. There may be a couple, but most of them are Fedora users. Also, there probably aren't many #fedora ops on this forum, but I could be wrong.

Unfortunately online chat can create a sort of exclusive elite club. Some Linux users are particularly rude to new users, which is unfortunate in my opinion.

Here's a little secret: I don't use regularly everything I give advice for. If nothing else I try to point people in the right direction, which is better than no answer at all.

Unhappy Newbie Here Also Got Banned For No Reason

Hi I Also Got Banned Today I Was Asked To Type In A Command And Then Paste The Output But i Wasnt Told In The Original Statement That I had To Paste The Info To A Website Instead, This Led To Me Being Kicked Out Of The Room, I Was Therfore Speaking With Someone Privatly Who Explained How Things Worked With Fedora Channel And Advise I Wasnt Banned But Only Kicked, However This Is Not The Case And I Can Not Gain Entry

I Was Kicked Without Warning Of What I Had Done Wrong Except After I Was Booted, The Person Who I Was Speaking Privatly Had Explained I Needed The Output Pasted To A Website And Then The URL Pasted Into The Channel.

I Had Really Thought The Linux Community Was Far Better, But Seems To Me Linke The Money Hungry Corps Are More Polite And At Least Give You Warnings And Explanations Before Anything Happens This Is Going Down The Wrong Path, When Run By Community It Should Be Felt Like A Community And The Way I Qs Treated Was Like We Have No Freedom Or That I Didnt Even Exist

A Simple Sorry But You Wernt Allowed To Do That Would Have Been Sufficient, I Now Relize Why Software Developers Charge Money For Things....? Just Think About It...

I Hope Someone Can Really Sort Out How The Moderation Of The Fedora Channel Is Done Also The Banning Policies Need To Be Thoughtup By The Fedora Community Not Made Up On A Case By Case Basis By The 1 Person...

Im Really Thinking ABout Moving Backonto Windows Again As No Point Using Or Retaining Linux Or Developing For Linux If Im Not Allowed To Be Part Of The Support Community Or Community So If I Do Not Get Unbanned I Know Im Unwelcome And Therfore Will Not DEVELOP Linux Software And Will Move Back To The Windows Enviroment And Will Also Advise Against Installing Fedora To All My Friends Or If I Am Asked About It I Will Also State Not To Install It.

I Hope You Guys Are Happy The Way You Treat Newcomers To Linux

You've noticed that this thread is several years old.

I'm not sure that anyone concerned with the administration Freenode is involved with FedoraForum.org on a regular basis. You may want to find another route of communication with them about your last statement about going back to Windows if not unbanned. (Word to the wise: don't threaten - it really doesn't work in your favor.)

Also, what in the hell are you doing using IRC to do something other than idle?

Keep in mind that as a general rule, IRC is a joke. It's useless and it's a great hangout for morons that would like nothing better than to come up with a witty comment that hurts someone elses' feelings. There are indeed exceptions(helpful channels & people), but not enough for me to EVER consider using it.

That being said, may I simply state that with the tone of your comments, I would have a hard time not booting you as well Anyone that states they're going back to Windows most definitely should. It was truly designed for people of this mindset.

thanks,
json

IRC? we don't need no stinkin' IRC The FedoraForum has no connection with #Fedora...nor any input on what they do there...yes some of our members are on there, but not on the behalf of the forum.
So for some guidelines:
1st- your complaining in the wrong place.
2nd- setting a timer to send a repeating message IS spam.
3rd- if you had read the rules you would see it says "do not paste more than 4 lines!"
(I don't even use IRC regularly, but I can certainly understand why these things would not be allowed.)

And in general, I think IRC is great for a pre-arranged chat session or discussion...but not as a place to find help, you are better off in a forum.

Wow, even 4 years ago people had a stick up their cocoa chute in that channel.

No, I haven't been banned from there because I'm keen to how hostile nerds think so I can typically diffuse a bad situation, but I can see getting easily banned. IRC isn't too bad on that server on some channels. I used to go there a while ago, but since the snooty nerd bastards in charge ignored my requests for a cloak, I lost interest.

Well, now that you've said it, Bob has to close the thread. It's written law.

Thanks a lot, man Another valuable and informative thread will lose it's life to Bob's nimble fingers....

thanks,
