Permission Denied

Hello All,
I want to alter setting in scripts. Whether I use a graphic GUI or use terminal as su and get to root, I get the message 'Permission Denied'. Also, many commands I type in result in 'command not found', for example lsmod amongst others.
Any suggestions?

Use

su -

to switch to root. The "-" is important: it gives you the root user's environment as well as permissions. Basically, root's PATH includes /sbin and /usr/sbin whereas a normal user's PATH doesn't.
