Gnome not starting anymore

Few days ago my fc3 was perfect. Everything was working and life was good. Until I made this disaster typo in root mode:
in /home/user/-directory: "chown user .* -R"
Since then my normal users aren't able to start gnome.
Am I correct that .* refers only one step upward in tree-topology? Hope so...

I made some research about it and found out that in "troubleshooting mode" of X (you get only that one terminal... sorry not using fc3 with english language installed) gnome gives error messages like:

"not able to create /home/user/.gnome -directory" (it exists, file permissions ok)
"not able to create /home/user/.gnome2 -directory" (it exists, file permissiond ok)

and something about "/tmp/orbit-user- directory not permitted to this user..."

Well I checked all these file permissions and they seem to be ok.

In addition I added a new user, but isn't able to start gnome too!

Could somebody help! I don't want to use fc3 and gnome in root mode (that works).

wonder if typing in
restorecon -R /home
would set the permissions back? Never used it for this exactly--but....

How about

chown -R user:user /home/user

You should own all files in your home directory.

Actually I already did it as you said Jman, but I solved the problem on my own. I never checked the rights of /home-folder Somehow it was changed to root only...

When that was fixed all users worked except one. The useraccount that got "save session"-tabbed didn't work. Propably settings got corrupted or something, 'cause it crashes X totally.

Fix: I just created a new account and copied some of settings (gaim, skype, email...) from old account.

So Everything works now! Thanks everybody!
