Sound Mixer

I just tried to play an MP3 for the first time and realized that my sound is screwed up. I can hear the test sound when I do soundcard detection (very faintly), but when I try to open volume control I get the error:
"Sorry, no mixer elements and/or devices found."
I assume that I need to install some type of mixer element and/or device, but what? I havel ALSA-Utils and everything else that I could find using Synaptic searching for mixer, audio, or sound.

Thanks for the help.

If your using xmms you need to check your output plugins. If you are using alsa if not then you need to setup an asoundrc in your home directory. To configure it you need to search this site there are numerous posts regarding asoundrc files.

Okay, I have it playing music now, but it is really quiet. and I still can't open up a volume control panel. (same error). I got the music by chaning the output plugin for XMMS. What is this error really telling me?
Thanks

That it can't find your mixer. This could be cause its looking for a mixer that doesn't exist. e.g. oss instead of alsa or something along those lines.
