Pinging a Windows Workstation

Hello,

I need help! I am currently connected with my linux laptop to a network containing windows boxes. I am trying to do the simple task of pinging one of the windows pc's.

How can I ping a windows box using it's workstation name? Do I require SAMBA for this?

Did you try: ping name_of_workstation in a terminal?

Yes I did.

I fixed the problem. I was pinging WORKSTATION_NAME without the Active Directory string at the end.

So the solution is:

# ping WORKSTATION_NAME.whitehouse.com

Works like a charm....

By including the remainder of the name, your system is relying on DNS to do the name lookup. Without the remainder of the domain (domain.com), you would be relying on WINS and that does require the use of SAMBA.
