Help with FC3 + LG DVD DL Burner in USB enclosure

LG GSA-4163B DVD "multi' DVD-DL burner
In a Rosewil RX50 USB2.0 enclosure.
FC3 ( 2.6.9-Fred) on Dell Latitued D600

cdrecord and x-cdroast will not scan/see the drive???

Linux/FC3 sees it ok - automount a CD. DMESG says (when I plug it in and 'modprobe usb-storage' ):

usb 1-3: new high speed USB device using address 2
SCSI subsystem initialized
Initializing USB Mass Storage driver...
scsi0 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage devices
Vendor: HL-DT-ST Model: DVDRAM GSA-4163B Rev: A101
Type: CD-ROM ANSI SCSI revision: 02
USB Mass Storage device found at 2
usbcore: registered new driver usb-storage
USB Mass Storage support registered.
sr0: scsi3-mmc drive: 40x/40x writer dvd-ram cd/rw xa/form2 cdda tray
Attached scsi CD-ROM sr0 at scsi0, channel 0, id 0, lun 0
ISO 9660 Extensions: Microsoft Joliet Level 3
ISOFS: changing to secondary root

hwbrowser sees the drive and lshw sees it and prints out all sorts of stuf about it (oh and works under WinXP too).

How do I make cdrecord/xcdroast see it?

cdrecord -scanbus output....(for LG/USB drive)

cdrecord -scanbus doesn't even record/see the device...

It does see my internal CD/DVD drive. But nothing about external drive.

mine too is recognized as CD/DVD reader. The issue is that I can't burn to it - because cdrecord doesn't see it.

is there an entry in the /dev/ marked scd0?

try cdrecord -v dev=/dev/scd0 speed=8 -data FC3-disk1.iso

or what ever iso you have

Interesting - I have been farking around with this for a couple of weeks on and off - and never tried this - i guess I am mildly red - faced at the moment....

I put in blank media (cd-r) in the LG drive - and now stuff *look* like it will work more like I am used to....I have been relying on 'cdrecord -scanbus' to acknowledge the drive and it simply won't. Oddly (or not), cdrecord -scanbus sees my other (built in CD-RW/DVD-ROM) fine - reguardless of presence or type of media (blank, cd, dvd).

I was expecting the same behaviour of the LG drive - it doesn't.

Your suggestion about 'dev=/dev/scd0' (which I thought I had tried before) led me to try some stuff:

cdrecord -prcap -dev=/dev/scd0 (no disc printed stuff about FAKE ADAPTEC??? but no errors)

on a whim I inserted blank CD-R and the FC3 CD/DVD Creator thing came up - good sign.

cdrecord -prcap -dev=/dev/scd0 then prints out rather detailed info - IDs the drive and most of its capabilities (did not list write DVD+R DL - but maybe cdrecord doesn't know about this yet).

Now to test burn...
