Use KDE as default?

Since I installed FedoraCore 3 for the second time I noticed that I can't boot directly into the KDE enviroment. My machine automagically boots with GNOME. How can I change this back to KDE?

The GUI under Preferences is not there... I know that I installed less than the first time when I installed FC3.

try to switch to KDM instead of GDM (Gnomes Log in Manager). KDM is easy to change preferences from root, remembers what you logged onto last time to use as the default, and it will allow you to easily set up auto-login at system boot.

http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showth...switch+GDM+KDM

Reboot the system. Now you should see KDM instead of GDM. Log in as root. Open KDE's control center and find the login manager section. (I think it's under system administration or something) and you should be able to go from there.

Good Luck,
OmniUni

Changing default environment to KDE

The best way to do this would be to edit /etc/sysconfig/desktop.

By default this is set to GNOME. Just switch it to KDE and you're all set!

Hm, for whatever reason, the switchdesk applet and /etc/sysconfig/desktop to not appear to store their settings in the same place, and switchdesk overrides /etc/sysconfig/desktop. Just something to keep in mind if you can't seem to get the behaviour you want.

switchdesktop kde didn't work. Fixed the problem by installing switchdesk-gui with YUM.
Thanks for the help.

Sorry typo. Got the message back that it changed the desktop to KDE.. But after a reboot everything was still the same.. GNOME was started. But found that the GUI version wasn't installed. Installed it and that seemed to do the trick.
