Capturing and encoding video?

I've got a TV Card in my PC. Using the software under windows I am able to capture the video to hard disk and then later compress it (divx codec for video and mp3 for audio).

I know that to use the TV card under linux I can use the command xawtv -noxv but how do I capture to hard disk? And once I've got that happening, how do I encode to divx and mp3?

try virtual dub, I believe there's a linux version available. I haven't used it for capturing only for encoding from one format to another, as well as editing some movies. It works quite well for an open source program. just google for it.

Oh cool! I didn't realise there was a Linux version of Virtual Dub.

Can anyone recommend a good mp3 codec and how to install it. I just got DivX for linux and I intend to use that for the video.
