Try running, for example,
oowriter
(or,
openoffice.org-1.9 -writer
if you are running the beta)
from a terminal window and seeing if there is any diagnostic printed there.

Sorry carney, misunderstood your problem.
I do not know Gnome very well, but is it possible
/usr/share/applications/
can be of interest?

You can't right-click on the icon, and under "Properties" change "Command" to point to the correct location to run the program(s)? Just trying to understand the situation here...

I have segmentation fault on OpenOffice.org 1.9. on my system. That issue is pending since 1.9.93 version.
