Problem configuring modem

I am new to Linux and have recently installed Fedora Core 3 on my PC (dual boot with WinXP). I have a D-Link modem 560IS+++, whose driver for Linux also I downloaded and installed. On trying to activate the modem to log on to the net, I get an "error 8".
Since my modem is connected to COM3, I assume that would mean ttyS2.
I tried minicom too but is unable to initialize the modem. Can somebody please help?
