Same issue here on my desktop system. I did check the Creative website and they do not support my Audigy2 ZS Gamer edition with Linux drivers for my 7.1 system , so I am guessing my 7.1 system will stay 2.1 for now while I am using FC3. Dual booting, so if I really want to "kick it" in hi-gear, I just boot back into WinXP Pro.

Alsa supports your sound card, but I don't know if it supports 7.1 sound. I'm thinking of buying a 7.1 card too (SB live), so I'm going to google now.
For more info, see the creative page on the alsa site

According to this article alsa supports surround sound and 5.1 and 7.1 speakers, so I think I will get myself a SB Live 7.1 card

Yea try installing ALSA drivers from the ALSA web site. Also, make sure your surround sound is turned on in the volume control. For some reason, ever since I upgraded my kernel my surround and center sound are muted whenever I reboot my computer.

alsa supports surround sound, you have to edit your .asoundrc file for it, another option is to use the advanced options in your sound system config and put in -Dplug:surround71 ( for 7.1 surround sound, for other options look at the alsa help files. )
you can use
/usr/bin/speaker-test -Dplug:surround71 -c8
/usr/bin/speaker-test -Dplug:surround51 -c6
to test if your speakers are set correctely. ( need to have alsa-utils installed for that though. ) If you plan to buy a creative live 7.1 24 bit soundcard check out my thread with that name, you need to compile your own alsa driver from the newest source. There is a howto on the alsa page for that just look up the card in the sound matrix and click on the module name to get to it ( ca0106 )
