FC3 GUI does not work with AMD64 CPU
Hello,
I'm having some troubles installing FC3 64bit. I'll put the details in point form for your reading pleasure:
1) When I try to install from the 64bit FC3 DVD, it gets up to the point where it checks my media. I say OK to this, and it does it fine. However, after this, when it tries to switch to the GUI install menu, I see a whole bunch of garble on the screen.
2) If I use the text installer with the FC3 64Bit DVD, it works fine. When I reboot though, and it tries to go into the GUI, I get the same garble. I suspect it is actually booting up bethind their, cause when I ctrl+alt+del, it seems to shut down in an intelgent fashion (unmounting drives, etc).
3) The 32bit FC3 DVD installs just fine - No problems with anything.
4) I have downloaded the 64bit FC3 DVD twice now, from two difference sources - excact same problem with each.
I'll put the specs of my machine here also, if that helps:
CPU: Athlon64 3000B
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-K8NF-9
Memory: Corsair TWIN512-3200C2 (2 x 256MB Dual Channel Optimised Pair)
Video Card: PixelView PV-N44E(64LD) (GeForce 6200 64MB PCI-E)
HDD: Seagate ST3250823AS 250GB Serial ATA 150Mbps 7200rpm HDD 8mb Cache w/NCQ
I have tried installing with the SATA drive disconnected, and an old IDE drive connected, but that did not help.
Can anyone help me with this?
Thanks.

Have you set it manually? (like 1280 x 960 or similar)?
I have an off brand monitor (REALsync) that I had to do the same for... however, yours is a brand name, so you may have to set the resolution manually or the name of the monitor manually.

I only get that option during a graphic install (which I have used with the 32 bit version).
With the text based instal, I dont remember anywhere we I can set the graphics detail.
So no, no I didnt.

Your video card is newer than the X version that shipped in FC3's installer. It *may* work if you install in text mode then upgrade to the latest FC3 update with includes xorg-x11-6.8.2. But nVidia is likely only supported in Vesa (crappy) mode for PCI-Express cards, so you may want to try nVidia's evil proprietary closed source driver. But who knows if nVidia maintains their 64bit stuff as well as 32bit.
In any case two things are true in your situation:
1) You will need to install FC3 in text mode (or try FC4test2)
2) You are forever held hostage by nVidia's whims because their driver is not open source.

I, myself am somewhat of a n00b, but try this:
Boot into Run Level 3 and at the Bash type:
Code:
system-config-display
To get into Run Level 3 at the (hopeful thinking) GRUB boot window, hit enter, press e, find the line that starts with Kernel, press e again, add a space, and press 3, hit enter, and hit b.
To change back, do the same, except use 5 instead of 3.

And you need to be in root (Superuser mode) when you are in Run Level 3

I'm getting a similar problem. It detects display, monitor and mouse. But when it loads the VESA driver, everything gets garbled. Like when U load the wrong driver. I got around the installation using text install, but then at reeboot, same problem. If I only could install the Nvidia driver, I think it should work. Anyone know the command to pass to GRUB at boot to start up in textmode?

ocZer,
I have been trying the suggestions made in the links posted by rowntreerob, but I havnt had any luck yet. But my life has been very frantic for the past few days, so I havnt been able to give any of them a decent go. If I do work it out, I'll try to remember the steps so I can post them very explicitly. I'm also tempted to try FC4 (even though it is still in test right now).

Hi fweeee!
I just came over http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=43493&page=1&pp=15 post here at the forums. I don't know if you have already seen it. There is a lot of people having the same problem, and it looks like they all have Geforce 6600GT PCI-E cards.
thanx!

FC3 GUI does not work
if it helps there is a thread below and post #8 on the thread mentions details editiing xorg.conf file for your particular monitor .
FC3 x86_64 X problems
Note that in my case, when we really got close - after install of updated Nforce driver and after install of updated Nvidia driver - the screen was still garbled but it was not a total mess.
Last symptom was a rapidly scrolling screen with an image about 300x300 pixels that looked as thou it may be a normal screen. Scrolling as fast as it did, it was hard to make out.
Then, as post #8 in the thread above indicates, some manual edits to the xorg.conf file were made to declarations for the refresh rates and the sync rates. That fixed it.

This allows BASH access to the display properties, where you can choose drivers and monitors. However, you need to log on as root.
