Direct Connect and Firestarter firewall conflict.

I run valknut (dcgui) to connect to a direct connect hub on campus. The problem is this:
When I try to download files with firestarter running, the downloads start at about 1 mb/s (normal speed), but then quickly drop to almost zero. This is not the case if I stop the firewall. However, I have already opened several ports which were getting blocked when I was running valknut. These include:
9176, 3307, 4455, and 6347.
The firewall no longer logs any blocked connections when I am downloading, but the downloads still stop.
I can't figure out what else I can do.

thank you.
