The Real http-alt port?
Hi all,
I have a small problem. I currently have both port 8080 and 8000 open on my webserver, but I'd like to know which port is the true http-alt port. nmap port scan says 8000 is http-alt, yet in Firefox, the favicon.ico doesn't appear as it does, and it normally will if running on port 80 or 8080. In other words, some sources say that 8000 is http-alt and others say 8080 is. See what I mean?
Thanks,
Firewing1

There isn't an offical alternate port.
Posrts above some number are user ports. Like 4000 or 6000
I've seen port 8080, 8088, 8888 used.
Pick one you like for enteranal web - which is called the Intranet vs. the Internet.
SJ
I like 8080 myself but now that I've told you (and the world) I'll have to pick another one.

there really is not true alternative http port, although i would probably go with 8080 being more popular, as 8000 is often used by proxy servers, of course if isp's think 8080 is more popular, they might block that as well as 80....
you could use https on port 443

According to Internet Assigned Numbers Authority 8008 and 8080 are HTTP - Alternates
8000 is listed a iRDMI

Yeah, and FOSS stands for Sun Java.
Behind my FW, there is not offical anything.
In the USA, dispite our current facistic fear mongering administration, with all their effoorts to override and distory the constitution,
the 4th Ammendment is still in place.
Tell it to the sky.

Thanks! I'll jsut leave both open, I i've seen proxies run on either, so if a user has a proxie, it will not work...
You can check out my site at http://s-computers.dyndns.org:8000 (and now) :8080 .... lol
Thanks a lot,
