I say bring back the positive rep feature. Having positive rep only (without negative rep) is harmless, and can only encourage posters to have good, informative posts. I know when I had received postive rep for some of my more informative posts, it totally encouraged me to give even more informative posts. It's just nice to get positive feedback when you put in effort helping someone out, or expressing a postive opinion about something.

We've discussed this amongst the staff and for now, reputation will be turned off. We might change our minds and go with some sort of method of awarding good answers in the future, but we promise nothing.

It sucks that one party pooper ruined it for all of us. I really have no way of knowing now that if the info I gave was correct and or helpful. Seems a waste of bandwith to have a user leave a message on the tail end of a thread to thanks
Just my thoughts

Yes, I can totally agree with a reputation system that has a "positive only, no negative" system. I feel that this would be great.

yes, if you get rep for an answer, you know it worked... but if an 'it worked' is posted, everyone knows that this is a possible solution

Guys, everyone has an opinion, but Ewdi has the final say and for now, it's been decided to drop the reputation. When he feels that a better system is available, I'm sure it will be implemented. In the meantime, what Mat says does make sense - a quick 'thanks, that worked' is worth a lot more than a few points to me. Actually, buying me a beer would be better than both......

I agree Bob,

That's why I liked a reputation, at least I knew then that someone felt that my answers/solutions were worth something. As it stands now I really don't know who I'm helping and how much......

Hmmm, guess I will try to think through an equitable solution and see if anybody's interested. What the heck, I would even be happy to code it....

The reputation system, imho, is a crucial tool available to the reader of this forum. We are creating an ocean of questions and answears and I believe the reputation counter is the only way I've got to easily identificate the relevant contributions from the others. I don't mean we should ignore the replies from people with low reputation (as me) but when someone needs to prioritize its answears (because of lack of time, for instance), it does help to know who are the guys who are considered the best contributors to the forum.

I really must disagree - for reasons already mentioned in this, and the other, thread. The system is prone to abuse and certainly isn't a valid indicator of a members' knowledge or helpfulness. There is no guarantee that helpful posts are rewarded, and there were multiple instances of rep-retaliation among several members. The only way most people recieved reputation on a regular basis was to add a *beg* to their signature, reminding (pressuring) users to add to their reputation. This eventually lead to so called "reputation whores" who only helped for the point gain - and were offended if no feedback was left. Those who truly know how this particular system worked (or didn't) can recognize the need for a more effective system. The old system was flawed, and I don't miss it.

That being said, I reply to a fair number of posts, ranging from the very simple to the very technical - and I rarely seek assistance. I know I'm helping and don't require some sort of reward to thank me. Lets not forget why we joined in the first place - to get help and to help others - not to compete for points.

This seems to be carrying over into too many threads folk. I'm closing this one, the issues have been gone over a lot already. Just look at some of the other threads on it in this forum.
