for non-directx apps it's ok wine
in order to use DX apps you need WineX/Cedega!

After installing Cedega, I find the install file in Konqueror file manager (locate the windows executable on the the cdrom),
then right click and then choose "open with", then type "cedega"
This starts the install process and a new folder will appear on your menu "Transgaming"
and under it the game.
I have only used it with Half Life at this time...which works great.

Cedega/Point2Play
www.transgaming.com
It's a pay service, a small monthly fee for access to the most recent development versions... and they're really great and they add support for new games/software very quickly. They use a democratic development process: you vote on what you want the developers to work to support. It's painless, especially with the included all-gui Point2Play app and worth every penny. I think it's $5 a month and a larger one time fee.

Cedega lets you run apps in real full-screen mode right? All the screenshots I saw show application windows.

Let me ask again. Can you run apps with Wine/Cedega full screen? Or do you have to run them in windowed mode?

Yes, you can run them fullscreen. Anarchy Online you can't, just about everything else you can. I play Counter Strike and Condition Zero all the time using steam on Cedega.
Yes, Cedega is mostly for games.

I see. I just installed Wine and tried to install a game (Tzar). It installed fine but doesn't play. I had rushed thru and installed without paying attention to the instructions and DLLs and stuff so I wasn't expecting it to work anyway. The question is: How do you uninstall a game/app you installed with wine? Do you just delete the game directory in "Program Files" (Wine also created a shortcut on desktop)?
