FC3 not bootable with vmware?

My first attempt to install fedora onto vmware failed with a message:

"Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill the idle task!"

After reading through various threads around the web I tried the install with "linux boot=idle" and everything worked well. However I haven't yet been able to boot after what seemed like a successful install.

While attempting to boot I see..
"Uncompressing Linux... Ok, booting the kernel.
PCI: Cannot allocate resource region 4 of device 0000:00:07.1
audit(1112219819.528:0): initialzed
invalid operand: 0000 [#1]

Which leads to the same Kernel Panic error that I was receiving when I first attempted to install. It hangs there and never boots..

Any suggestions? I've tried to read as much online about this as I could find.

I'm running the latest version of Vmware Workstation (Windows Host)/(Linux Guest), and it works great. I'm running it on a laptop (Dell Lat 600). I did not install the VMware tools for the machine because I found some issues with the kernel version I was running earlier, and just did not try it again. When something is working don't mess with it.

What amount of RAm are you giving to the VM? Are you using the SCSI (vmware) controller or some other (IDE)? I use SCSI even though I have IDE drives. I made sure I gave 512meg and 6 gigs to the machine. All installed fine with bridged network configuration.

What do you have for hardware?

Interesting. I have a Compaq NC8000 laptop running Windoze XP Pro as the host.
I installed FC3 as a guest system and after the installation completed, all was good.
However, the moment I installed VMware sTools, it hosed the installation and X would not start.
So, I will reinstall FC3, yet again and not bother with VMware sTools. However, that will limit me to
a display resolution of only 640x480. But, I can live with that.

Are you sure that it is locked at 640x480 and not 800x600. I know the later looks like 640x480 when one is use to much higher resolutions. I think mine is either 640x480 or 800x600, I did go in and modify the X conf with that value and it worked. I hear you when you had issues with the tools package, I did the same thing and went right back to no tools.

You're correct. It's locked at 800x600 which is a sight better than the smaller resolution.
I'm just about to reinstall FC3 without VMware Stools.
Thanks.

It would seem I am the only one who cannot get it to boot whatsoever.

I can't even install the tools.
