Hum, Is your network alive?
What does netstat -rn say... Is there a default router configured?
Do you have a direct connection, or do you need to log in to your network?

No router though.
Yes I can log in in windows XP.
Netstat -rn gives me
destination gateway Gen
69.23.60.128 - 0.0.0.0 - 255.255.255.128
169.254.0.0 - 0.0.0.0 - 255.255.0.0
0.0.0.0 - 69.23.60.129 - 0.0.0.0
I do have to log in to get to the internet on WinXP

This is your default router : 0.0.0.0 - 69.23.60.129 - 0.0.0.0
You can make it visible by using, netstat -r
But, seeing this, I think the problem is the way to log in to your network. Unfortunately I am not familiar to that. somthing like ppp over IP or so?
If so, I just found this, maby of some help ??? look at "man adsl-setup"

As of 2 months ago, I had to change ISP because AOL is not linux compatible except for a special dialer they have released to LINSPIRE users. This may have changed since, but I would call them and confirm this.
Also, if this is not the problem, you can google for host resolving problems in fedora / Redhat products since 1999. There is a problem in the way the /etc/resolv.conf file is handled, causing your browsers to look in the wrong place for the ISP address.
Finally, you have to determine some info about your modem. some setups are not linux friendly and in some cases are not linux compatible even tho that is changing rapidly.
good luck

If I read this article, AOL should be able to give some help I think.

AOL is using PPPoE, so that should not be a problem ! ? Did you try adsl-start ?

Remember, this article dates back to 2002, and also states that linux users should not hold their breath. If you are able to get AOL to play nice with your linux box, let us know how it worked out.
Thanks

all isps are compatable with linux.. thats just a marketing scam by aol and microsoft to force you onto windows by the way. the modem drivers can be found for aol modems, they are just modems... im glad aol isnt big over here in australia
sorry, i know that doesnt help much but i thought i should tell you that little fact.

I have the same, or a very similar problem re DHCP
Flabbergasted newbie here: This is my 5th install of Fedora Core 3 and I am out of options. No matter what I select or setup in the configuration menu, my internet 'settings' default from DHCP to 'static'. I am unable to figure out how to change it to DHCP and at wits end at the moment.
I have a Surfboard 4200 Cable modem and it works fine with XP in a dual boot arrangement (hence how I am writing this now).
I have read several 'how to's' and still no luck. My internet settings are assigned via DHCP when using XP, but can I figure out how to set it up in Core 3... NOOOOOOOOO... NOOO! I say..
To top it all off now, with this latest 'fresh' install, I’m unable to boot most of my programs. System just says "starting blah blah blah" (in Gnome or the GUI windows interface) and then it stops.
I know I should be doing all this from the command line but switching backwards and forwards between 'windows' and a command prompt wasn’t helping the situation.
I have about 2 reams of 'print outs' about 'configuring modems, networks, command line usage and prompts' and I’m not sure what else there is left to try.
Tips anyone; would be much appreciated.
