wvstream and wvdial

I am COMPLETELY new to linux. I installed Core 3 the other day, and I've been messing with it, I'm starting to get used to it. Where I live, I cannot get any internet service aside from dialup. I looked into setting up a dial up connection, and I'm having trouble. I e-mailed someone from LinuxUser&Developer magazine, and they referred me to WvDial. I downloaded that, and it said it required WvStream Library, which I'm not even sure if I have or not. So I have all of these files, but I do not know where to begin with the compilation and installation. Step-by-step help?

Teh bump won't help ... unless you give us some more information, as for example what device you are talking about, how is it connected to your computer and such ;-)

I have a v.92 US Robotics 56k faxmodem, and I just need to get Fedora to dial it.

The bigger problem for me is the difficulty with install wvstreams library, and then compiling wvdial?

I have no clue what I'm doing.

I have my modem set up as eth1, if that helps.

The last US Robotics modem of that kind I had was connected to the serial port of the computer.
It did not have an ethernet port - but times might have changed ;-)

But let's put irony aside. Where did you plug the modem to.
In case it is the serial port you need to have a link /dev/modem point to /dev/ttyS0 or /dev/ttyS1.
The modem probably needs an init string if the default one (within the modem) does not work.
The connection is made via pppd and there are certain getty programs that offer for example a voice box.

That's all I can say at the moment because you did not mention your linux distribution.
