The GPL licence forces everyone to publich the sources, if he publishes binary files. The SRPM (source rpm) is the way of RedHat of releasing its sources.

Hello again Armen

As I suggested in your previous thread I think Apt and Synaptic will help you a lot.

They will allow you to automatically search, download and install the software you need without having to worry about dependencies.

hi,
thanks again for your response. I downloaded & extracted Apt, but I don't know what to do next. I wish there was some procedure to follow on how to install Apt?

and more importantly, when i download software, where should i install it?
under home/
under usr/
what directory is the ideal place to install user-level applications?

also,
do i need to recompile my kernel if I install software?

please respond even if these ?'s are basic for you, I am very curious.

Hello armen,
pelase try to read this post and to undestand it:
Fedora is a RPM-based dsitribution. RPM is the RPM Package Manager (http://www.rpm.org/). foolish wrote about RPM here : http://foolish.fedorausers.org/rpm/
Eventhough it looks like a lot of text please read though it.
It will answer a lot of the questions about installing software in Linux.

And one more time I give you this link : http://www.fedorafaq.org/#installsoftware and quote from it :
Quote:
The easiest way to install software in Fedora is to use yum.
So go there read through the article and do what is described there. Then you can install apt and synaptic with the command
Code:
yum install apt synaptic
