Xpilot writes "Linus Torvalds has just announced the availability of the newest Linux kernel release, 2.6.11. The newest addition to Linux that's stirring up some excitement is the inclusion of Infiniband support. You can get it from the usual mirrors at http://kernel.org/mirrors."

Interesting, I thought I'd post part of Wiki's definition on 'InfiniBand'
Quote:
InfiniBand is a high-speed serial computer bus, intended for both internal and external connections. It is the result of merging two competing designs, Future I/O, developed by Compaq, IBM, and Hewlett-Packard, with Next Generation I/O (ngio), developed by Intel, Microsoft, and Sun Microsystems. For a short time before the group came up with a new name, InfiniBand was called System I/O. Intel has since refocused its attention on a quasi-alternative, PCI Express, casting some doubt over the future of InfiniBand.

InfiniBand uses a bidirectional serial bus for low cost and low latency. Nevertheless it is very fast, 10Gbps in both directions. InfiniBand uses a switched fabric topology so several devices can share the network at the same time (as opposed to a bus topology). Data is transmitted in packets, that taken together form a message. A message can be a direct memory access read or write operation, a channel send or receive, a transaction-based operation (that can be reversed), or a multicast transmission.
I got that link from the Slashdot article.

News headlines from fedoraforum.org should always be locked threads and be in a forum section like "NEWS" and then, etc.

LOL,

2.6.11.2, fresh compile, (using "make oldconfig" from my 2.6.10 install) won't boot.

Looks like it might have killed grub as well.

Writing this from "win-XP".

(never knew that using my FC3 disk #1 as a coaster for my diet coke would eat away the reflective coating!!!!!!!!!!, downloading and re-burning FC3 disk 1 as i write!)

Hmm, what would you of done if you didn't have XP installed?

Will we be seeing this kernel on a FC3 depo any time soon?

Given the timelines, we might see it in FC4. I wouldn't wager either way, actually.

What you're supposed to do is compile the new kernel but keep the old kernel referenced in grub. Then if the new one has a problem then you have the option to fall back to the old one.
