Installing Mozilla Plugin JRE

My second day with linux is today

I am trying to install the J2se/1.5.0_01 as a plugin to mozilla

java.com says to create a symbolic link to the Plug-in in the Mozilla plugins directory

The site is not specific enough for me it tells me
cd <Mozilla>/plugins ---- I did that
then
ln -s <JRE>/plugin/i386/ns7-gcc29/libjavaplugin_oji.so .

I do all that and I get what I think is the symbolic link to the lib file, but
the symbolic link is listed in boxed red while the other plugins are there in
green letters.

This must mean that the link isn't working, but I get the message when I type
into the terminal "FILE EXISTS"

PS when I try double clicking on the downloaded jre-1_5_0_01-linux-i586.rpm
it says that package is already installed - but it won't tell me where

TOTAL newbie here and lost
Much appreciation for any help
Thanx again
Keith

Check out this post and see how it goes. Also if using firefox then you are using the wrong plugin. Post mentions which to use.

Well I say you already have it installed and just need to goto the plugin section. To see if you have java installed run this command ' rpm -q jre '.

For mor info the --test option for the rpm command is used to test and see in the rpm will install successfully without really installing anything.

i'v got the same problem with firefox in fedora3 so the right link is not
ln -s <JRE>/plugin/i386/ns7-gcc29/libjavaplugin_oji.so
but ln -s <JRE>/plugin/i386/ns7/libjavaplugin_oji.so
there is two compiled lib. with gcc29 and i think gcc3 for firefox the ns7 works well

Linking to the file in the ns7 directory worked for me also. Was having probs getting the 1.4 version to work with Firefox. I got the newest version (1.5.01) and it works like a champ.

Which plugin to use depends on how the mozilla engine is compiled. Usually the ns7 works with firefox and mozilla 1.7.3 - 1.5..0. Then some 1.4 compiles required the gcc29 ones. Difficult to explain which one uses which one.

no I'm still lost

I moved around the libjavaplugin_oji.so file and I'm not sure where it's supposed to be sitting

every time I think I link to it correctly, mozilla won't start up - I just get an hour glass and then nothing
