I am planning a small scale backup server, for a few people located in my village.
Is there any easy of method to to this from, ftp or other? I currenty have a webserver online, could i use this to backup via ftp?

The simplest option would be to create an FTP account for each individual user. Your users can then FTP their data to their respective accounts.

Otherwise you could also use rsync for incremental backups (meaning that only the data that changed is sent).

Check out RSnapshot, which is based on rsync.

You might also look into Amanda. The Linux server and client are part of the distribution, and I believe there's a Windows client. It has "automagic" hands-off backup, which means you can schedule the backups according to taste/client needs.
