In order to run audacity and avoid conflicts with esd I need to first kill esd
$ killall esd && audacity
works fine, but how do I get esd to start again after audacity closes?
appears to work (I can hear the startup beeps), but sound events in gnome do not work anymore.
Also, Xmms now complains that some other process is blocking the sound card.
Also I have a startup sound configured for gnome, but I never hear it, and only hear the shutdown sound about half the time, or only partially.
