I've got this same problem with my SB Live. Apparently the Freindly folks at Fedora (or ALSA) concluded that their software was too perfect, so they decided to introduce a few bugs in this latest release.

Way to go team

Setting the master volume at startup

i had a similar problem on a Toshiba A70.
the following worked for me:

Note that snd-atiixp is the name of my soundcard.

Quote:
[...] open /etc/rc.d/rc.local and
append to the end of the file the following:

Code:
/sbin/modprobe snd-atiixp
amixer set Master 90% unmute
amixer set PCM 90% unmute
The above setting just unmutes the sound and puts it at 90%
volume. Sometimes it works, sometimes not.
I got this information from here http://plaza.ufl.edu/redboots/

I was having this same problem when I came across this. Try going to menu>>>preferences>>>control panel>>>sounds>> and then put a check in the box that says sound server startup. It seemed to fix my problem.

Hey, right on PeTzZz! You're today's MVP!

The solution (to persitant mute on reboot) was found in a link on one of those posts.
Code:
/sbin/MAKEDEV -d /etc/udev/devices/ sound
Now my volume is saved and restored every time I reboot.
