Loss of sound function after fedora 2 update

I tried to hook up the CRT monitor from my desktop to use on my laptop, but after some config problems X stopped working. since the mobo on my desktop got fried, this was my only computer for school, so i naturally freaked out. I just needed to reset my config file for X, but in my frantic search for answers i decided that i should try and reinstall FC2. I went through the normal install process, except i told it to 'update' instead of doing a complete reinstall. After that didnt fix it i decided to just fix the problem without X, which i did. My problem is that after all of that, i no longer have any sound at all and when i try to open the soundcard detection option in the system settings menu, it asks for my root password and then nothing happens at all. My sound worked good before, it was only after this update did it stop. Its a Dell Inspiron 7500. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

What sound card?

Did you try running
Code:
yum update
to get updated again? You probably have it configured for your updated system.

i ran yum update and nothing has changed, although it did update quite a few programs. i dont know what kind of sound card i have because i cant open up the hardware browser utility in the system tools menu because it crashes. when i try to run xmms is says:

please check that:

your sound card is configured properly
you have the correct output plugin selected
no other program is blocking the soundcard

when i use mplayer, it also doesn't have any sound. i'm confused as to why the hardware browser and the soundcard detection tools crash when i try to open them. any additional imput would be appreciated. Thanks!
