That sounded easy but here's what happened
[root@localhost temp]# apt-get install synaptic
Reading Package Lists... Done
Building Dependency Tree... Done
E: Couldn't find package synaptic
Edit: did some reading, and found I had to do an apt-get update first.
I now have synaptic - many thanks
