Question Administer vsftp

What's a good way of maintaining an FTP server remotely? I've got a vsftp server running and want to administer via ssh/scp etc... I've got that setup and working but I'm running into issues with maintaining the FTP site under /var/ftp Default setup but want our support guys to be able to copy and maintain files within that directory. Currently I've got local user accounts on that system for them where they scp in and when they try to copy files or directories they get nowhere due to the permissions on that directory. Is there a simple solution to this?

Perhaps changing the permissions on the directory in question to allow their group (or a specific user) to write to that directory?
You can usually do this easily through your file browser or via the chmod command.
