Unhappy Please Help - Problem with samba and winxp

Hi there,

I am new to Fedora and have just installed FC2. I am trying to view my other computers (all have windows xp) that are networked.

The problem is that, I cannot access my linux box through XP. I get this particular msg:

\\Localhost not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network source..............

Also, when I try to add a user (windows xp) on samba, none of the windows machine names exist. Users such as amd, nobody, amanda, route, pcnouser, etc exists. All these means nothing to me. How do I go about adding the windows machine? How do I go about setting up samba? I have tried reading many forums but none have been helpful....

Please help....

As far as the XP machines seeing shares on your fedora machine type
Code:
system-config-samba
Then goto preference > server settings, and make the appropriate changes there. Then add a share and set the permissions on it. Then you should be able to see it. Also be sure under server settings to set the workgroup up to the same workgroups as your XP machines.

Hi there! Thanks for replying. I had already done everything what you have recommended. I have made sure that the workgroup is the same as the workgroup in XP. FRom my lunix box, I can painlessly browse all the 4 other PC's I have on the network. But from the XP machines, I can't get access into the linux box.

can you see the linux machine from the XP machines and it just doesn't give you access to the shares, or can you not see it at all?

I have the same problem - I can see the Windows Shares on Linux box, but the XP box cannot see the Linux box.

Oddly enough, if I boot the Linux box with Knoppix, I can see ALL of the drives on the XP box (from within Knoppix), without them needing to be shared. Unfortunately, I don't know where Knoppix keeps its settings, so I have not been able to compare what it does with what my installed Linux (FC 3) does. I still can't see the Linux box from the XP one, even when the Linux one is booted with Knoppix.

The boxes are connected via a LAN. I have Samba running on the Linux box.

I can see the domain on the XP box, in My Network Places, but there are no servers in that.

I have confirmed that ZoneAlarm is treating the LAN as 'trusted'. I can ping each box from the other, both by IP address and by name (hosts file, not DNS).

Any help would be appreciated please.

First of all, the localhost name is only applicable to the Linux machine itself. You cannot go to another machine on the network and connect to localhost.localdomain.

From your windows box, try connecting to either the NetBIOS name you put into smb.conf or try connecting to the IP address of your Linux machine. For example, Start|Run, \\192.168.1.1

Gavita, it's gonna take some time to figure all of this Linux stuff out. Seriously, I was an MCSE before I started playing with Linux and I spent more than 2 years working/learning how to use Linux. It's not the easiest thing in the world, but worth the effort that you put into it.

In terms of learning, I do suggest the Red Hat Linux Bible series of books. They have a new version for Fedora and Enterprise that would be suitable.
