Question SATA - FC3 - AMD64 : what the problem ?

Hi,

I'm sorry to post about a subjet wich is already at the origin of many other posts. But I can't find my answer, because there is too much various informations published

I project to build a small server based on AMD64 on socket 754, with a motherboard based on nForce or VIA chipset and a SATA drive. But I found many posts about SATA problems... doesn't install... or install but doesn't boot, or run well but not after kernel update.... One with RAID, one juste with single SATA. One with FC2, FC3 test, ...

Then, it's difficult to know if there is still problem, and what is the problem. The question is rather simple : has current stable FC3 trouble with SATA ?

I don't just ask because I'm lazzy, I really searched, especialy in the post sticked in head of the forum, but... I'm lost.

Sam.

I run FC3 on dual 80G SATA drives on the VIA SATA controller on an MSI Master2-FAR. One thing I learned the hard way - FC3 will NOT boot off a RAID1 partition. I used to have my SATA drives set so that I had a RAID1 partition for /, and RAID0 partitions for /usr, /var, and /home. This worked great in FC3 test2. However, the official FC3 changed something so that RAID1 no longer booted properly (I've read lots of lots of complaints on this issue). I changed the RAID1 / into plain ext3 / and /tmp partitions (two partitions of ext3 using the original partitions which had been combined into a single RAID1 device) and FC3 had no trouble at all. It's just the system partition that needs to be non-RAID. I still use /usr, /var/, and /home as RAID0 devices.

Can you clarify? I boot off a RAID1 partition in FC3, (PATA not SATA). Others are successfully running RAID1 boot partitions on SATA (see this howto).

Thanks for the reply.

Then there is no problem with FC3 on SATA disk. At least not always.
