This is great news for laptop users since some major distros now use xorg such as fedora, mandrak, slackware.

Is Fedora Core 3 running Xorg 6.8 by default if I always update? Because I can't find Xfree86 or XOrg6.8 anywhere on my machine, using the "whereis" and "which" commands.

do you think that this driver supports ATI RADEON 340m???
or is it only the specific models that they mention
Dewey: yeah, try the command
rpm -qa | grep -i xorg

Thanks Picomp, worked like a charm. Gonna test out the drivers now.
And as for the Radeon 340m, can't hurt to try can it? The drivers include support for a few nonlisted cards, and some integrated chips.

just installed on fc3 with radeon9500 but no 3d
-uninstalled the mesa package with --nodeps
-installed fglrx rpm
-ran fgrlxconfig
-made a sym link from xorg.conf to XF86config-4
-had to fiddle around with some keyboard settings in XF86config-4
-startx succesfull
fgrlx info says:
------------
$ fglrxinfo
display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: Mesa project: www.mesa3d.org
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa GLX Indirect
OpenGL version string: 1.2 (1.5 Mesa 6.1)
------------
is it suppost to say that?
fgl_glxgears doesnt work:
------------
X Error of failed request: BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)
Major opcode of failed request: 142 (GLX)
Minor opcode of failed request: 5 (X_GLXMakeCurrent)
Serial number of failed request: 32
Current serial number in output stream: 32
------------
well so far for attempt 1,
will try again tomorrow

I'm having problems at the moment. When installing the drivers, I ran into this error.
Code:
The QT based control panel application did not load in any version.
and this one.
Code:
FATAL: Error inserting fglrx (/lib/modules/2.6.10-1.741_FC3/kernel/drivers/char/drm/fglrx.ko): Unknown symbol in module, orunknown parameter (see dmesg)
The website says to install QT, for the first error, but there was no newer version. I checked what qt packages I had, and here's what I got.
Code:
[dewey@fedora ~]$ rpm -qa | grep -i qt
PyQt-devel-3.13-1
qt-designer-3.3.3-8
qt-3.3.3-8
qt-devel-3.3.3-8
PyQt-3.13-1
And for the second error, there are directions here, http://www.ati.com/support/infobase/4481.html but I don't seem to have a /usr/src/linux dir.
It should work without the control panel thing, but it's a shame because I'd like to have an easy way to control the GPU. If anyone runs across a workaround, let me know please.
[edit:] Unsuccessfull configurations, I'll try again tomorrow.

Maybe you need the kernel-sourcecode package installed?

I got the same error but I just forced it and it apparently worked, I am able to log into X and dont notice anything odd the only thing is that my xorg.conf is completely empty.......That is really loosing me.

I have the same card, but I will wait for the rpm from Livna.
It seems that they are working to get it to function:

No (or very slow) OpenGL, few errors in syslog
Argh, I've got a lot of issues.
1. Driver can't be compiled with 2.6.10 due to kernel PCI interface change -
function pci_find_class() now renamed to pci_get_class(). It's easy to fix
yourself, btw.
2. No (or slow) OpenGL after several runs of OpenGL application.
'dmesg' after module loading is:
...
fglrx: module license 'Proprietary. (C) 2002 - ATI Technologies, Starnberg, GERMANY' taints kernel.
[fglrx] Maximum main memory to use for locked dma buffers: 930 MBytes.
PCI: Found IRQ 10 for device 0000:04:00.0
PCI: Sharing IRQ 10 with 0000:00:01.0
PCI: Sharing IRQ 10 with 0000:00:1b.0
PCI: Sharing IRQ 10 with 0000:00:1c.0
PCI: Sharing IRQ 10 with 0000:00:1d.3
[fglrx] module loaded - fglrx 8.8.25 [Jan 14 2005] on minor 0
mtrr: base(0xd8000000) is not aligned on a size(0x7ff0000) boundary
[fglrx:firegl_addmap] *ERROR* mtrr allocation failed (-22)
allocation failed: out of vmalloc space - use vmalloc=<size> to increase size.
[fglrx] free PCIe = 54804480
[fglrx] max PCIe = 54804480
[fglrx] free LFB = 116322304
[fglrx] max LFB = 116322304
[fglrx] free Inv = 0
[fglrx] max Inv = 0
[fglrx] total Inv = 0
[fglrx] total TIM = 0
[fglrx] total FB = 0
[fglrx] total PCIe = 16384
...
It's possible to run 'fgl_glxgears' few times. Next, the following messages are appeared in syslog:
...
[fglrx:firegl_rmmap] *ERROR* map 0xf724d990 still in use (map_count=1)
...
[fglrx:firegl_umm_init] *ERROR* UMM area already initialized!
[fglrx:firegl_unlock] *ERROR* Process [xxxx] using kernel context 0
After this, glxgears becomes _very_ slow (~60 fps vs. normal ~2300 fps).
Also, glxgears may fail with the following messages:
X Error of failed request: BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)
Major opcode of failed request: 142 (GLX)
Minor opcode of failed request: 5 (X_GLXMakeCurrent)
Serial number of failed request: 32
Current serial number in output stream: 32
Probably the root of evil here is MTRR error. I'm investigating this.
My stuff is: FC3 & vanilla 2.6.10, P4/3.2 GHz, MB Asus P5GD1,
GPU Asus Extreme AX600XT/HTVD.
