changing date/time hangs on ntp fc2

I have two fc2 boxes: one at home, one at work. ntp works fine at home with no config at all... I set it to use any of the redhat clocks and it retrieves the time with no issue.

on the work box, date and time gui freezes and I have to force quit.

*internet access works fine on evrything else
*ntpd is running (turned on AFTER box is turned on)
*firewall is set to allow port 123:udp

Is it possible that ntp/date+time install is bad? if so, how do I reinstall properly?

any help will help

To re-install ntp:

rpm -e ntp
up2date -i ntp

If you are using yum:

yum remove ntp
yum -y install ntp

What is confusing is that on the one machine ntp worked perfectly out of the box and on the other, I had to configure ntp.conf to point to a series of ntp servers. the one that worked right away does not have port 123 opened, and the configured one does...

the only difference I can see between the two is one is static ip w/port 123 opened and the other is DHCP w/123 closed.

I set my ntp.conf with a few different servers and commented out the entries in /etc/ntp/step-tickers and it started working... go figure.

also: since there are dependencies attached to ntp, namely, firstboot and system-config-date, I wonder if your instructions would allow for removing only ntp and not its dependencies...

If you know that you will be re-installing ntp (thus satisfying the dependencies), you can remove it with:

rpm -e --nodeps ntp

and then reinstall it. The "--nodeps" parameter tells rpm to ignore the dependency chain. This can leave your system unstable, but since you know that you will be replacing ntp immediately, it's OK.
