getting midi files to work

Hello, I have a sound blaster pci 512
Everything is default on my fc3 installation. I installed kmix, but it says it cannot open /dev/sequencer when i try to play a midi file. How can I make and play midi files in linux. I can play the midi's in timidity. I think i may need to recompile alsa with the sequencer option maybe? any help of where i should start looking would be appreciated. I tried to install rosegarden but i couldn't find all the deps.

Hi,

You can try running timidity as a server, which will open a number of ports for MIDI output. On my machine (vanilla FC3) I just had to make sure I'd got the module snd-seq running, either in /etc/modprobe.conf or by typing (as root):

modprobe snd-seq

Then I can run timidity in the background with the following:

timidity -iA -B2,8 -Os -EFreverb=0 2>&1 &

You could put the timidity command in /etc/rc.d/rc.local if you want it to be always available at boot.

The above will allow you to use Kmid to play MIDI files on a system without a hardware MIDI synth. Just ensure that Kmid is set to use one of the timidity ports to play its sound. Do this in Settings > MIDI Setup in the menu.

Good luck!
