Installing network printer
Hi everyone. I'm new to the community here. I have a question. I am a bigtime newbie to the Linux world and looking to resolve an issue I am dealing with. I have a 4 computer setup at home with three of my machines running Windows XP and the 4th running Fedora Core 2. My printer is hooked to one of my XP machines and I am having problems getting FC2 to recognize it. I have attempted to specify it's location when it didn't find it by default, but I must be doing something wrong.
Can someone give me some pointers to resolve this issue?
Thanks for your time.

This may be a stupid question but you have printer/filesharing turned on. Can your FC2 box see your window boxes that are on the network?

Yes, I have file/printer sharing on. Oddly enough it does say there is a Windows Network out there, but it sees no specific machine. Any ideas?

There is a gui (system-config-printer-gui
), where you can add new printers. There you can choose between normal and network-printers. This worked for me without problems, after I installed a package it needs. But it gives you a message if it is so.

This is actually where I have been stuck. It doesnt show a printer and when I attempt to specify an SMB printer I cant seem to find it. This is the info I attempt to input to no avail:
Workgroup - MSHOME
Server - DESKTOP (This is the name of my main machine where Printer lies)
Share - LexmarkX1100 Series (which is exactly how it is listed)
Username - None
Password - None
Any ideas?

I have the same problem which I have shelved for now (not enough time to play with computers). My guess is that this is to do with permissions. When I try to print to an XP served printer I get an NT_ACCESS error. Have you tried looking in the event log of your XP box which is serving the printer? There may be some clues there.

I'm not sure that voerm226 has the same problem. We are trying to use an XP hosted printer from a Fedora box.

Then go to do file you want to edit and type vi
Just try some in that it's not hard.
In vi you press the insert button to insert text to save from their do esc and then :wq
