Install hangs at "running /sbin/loader"

Hi ,

I'm installing Core-3 on a dual-boot (hopefully!) machine, and the
installer keeps hanging at the following line:

"running /sbin/loader"

I have tried all the options suggested in the installer help screens, and any additional ones that seemed relevant from Dog-One's excellent FAQ, including:

lowres, nofb, noprobe, nousb, acpi=off, skipddc, and nofirewire

I also tried the rescue mode. All to no avail . I checked the MD5 sums for all the ISO's and they're ok.

I have a Compaq Deskpro EN, with a Pentium III at 733 MHz, and 448 MB
RAM, running XP on the first partition.

I would really appreciate any help in getting the install going. I need to get Mono and DotGnu under Linux up and running ASAP, or else I'll be forced to start development on .NET/XP.

Many thanks ,

Pete Goulding

Who says you need Linux to use Mono and DotGNU?

I don't know about the hang, it could be serveral things.

Thanks for your point. I'm aware I don't need Linux for other implementations of CLI, but if I go the XP route then we will end up using MS .NET for other reasons. I would prefer to develop under Linux if possible.

I had the same problem trying to install FC3 on my laptop--a Toshiba 5005-S507. FC2 installed, but couldn't get ethernet to work for internet, but FC3 hangs the same as yours at the beginning of the install.

No one seems yet to have an answer, or a workaround, in this forum that I'm aware of (and my apologies is a workable one has been given.)

I'm using SuSE9.2 and Mandrake 10.1, both of which worked practically "out of the box", so to speak, but I really do want FC3 on the laptop.

You may have to try another distro. If you have broadband, you can download other free ones by going to www.distrowatch.com or www.linuxiso.org.

Richard, thanks for sharing your experience re the Tosh laptop. I was contemplating either Suse 9.1 or Mandrake 10.1 as my next step. Unless I see some address to the issue in the next few days, I'll give them a go. Cheers, Pete.

RE: Install hangs at "running /sbin/loader"

I had the same problem, I had fedora core 3 running fine, then i reinstalled it for other reasons and it hung at that exact point.

I think USB devices are the casue of this problem during installation, some guy removed his USB mouse and it worked and I removed my new USB printer and it works now.

Remove any USB devices and try it again? You should be able to use it again after install.

Just as a matter of personal preference, I tried Mandrake and SuSE too, both are excellent but Fedora seems that little bit nicer!

Cheers.
