apt-get died

I tried to update my apt-get database, both through synaptic and just by doing an apt-get update in a terminal. Synaptic failed. apt-get update gets me this:

E: Could not get lock /var/state/apt/lists/lock - open (11 Resource temporarily unavailable)

any ideas what happened? It was working last night.

I noticed Yum was down this evening too - let's be patient and give the tekkies their Sunday off - BUT they better fix this early on tomorrow!

Did you run the yum command as root?
