Unhappy Fedora + Sound => /dev/null

I have been reading about everyone's sound recording problems, my own included. I conclude that Fedora C3 doesn't like recording sound, or you have to have 10 years linux admin experience to get it to work. Is there anyone who could point all us soundless, not to say clueless, potential recorders to anb authoritative source of information as to how to set up sound recording?
