When i use the command smbclient -M //ajit ...i get the error message -- Connection to //ajit failed . However when i use a perl script to "net send" him , it works fine. What could be the prob?

Fair enough

I think you also have to use a switch for workgroup and give it the workgroup of the machine. Havent tried it in awhile but thats what I seem to remember

Just as an FYI:

With newer patches like SP2 for Windows XP, Microsoft is starting to disable the messenger service by default which is what netsend uses to complete the pop-up messages.

While I realize this isn't the problem you are having, you might want to look into some type of instant messenger like Jabber that would replace the use of the net send messages as they may fail to work down the line anyway. Just a thought.

Hello, I'd like to send such popup messages, too. However, I dont like samba, so how did you net send with a perl script?

the perl script is just a wrapper for the samba suite.

What a pity... I need to send some messages, but as I am not root I can't install Samba. Anyone who knows another possibility to send these Windows popup messages? If not Perl, maybe a simple c or c++ implementation?

Whatever implementation, it would still need to use the smb protocol as far as I know.

There's even a graphical client, but it still requires Samba.

If anybody is interested - I found a solution. There is a module for perl I overlooked when I checked CPAN.
Seems like it reimplements parts of the smb protocol itself, as it works without Samba.
It is called Net::NetSend and available on CPAN.
